After every gun-related death there are cries for more gun control laws which would have done nothing to stop the crime. But most anti-gunners don’t understand that the issue of violence has everything to do with the individual and not with the gun itself.
And it looks like the District Attorney for Stephens County in Oklahoma gets that. When asked if the tragic death of Australian born 22-year-old Christopher Lane could have prevented by stricter gun laws, DA Jason Hicks replied, ““Absolutely not, no way.”
Lane was attending East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma on a baseball scholarship. One evening he was jogging along a street near where his girlfriend lived when 3 thugs drove up and shot him with a .22 revolver.

“They saw Christopher go by, and one of them said: ‘There’s our target,’ Police Chief Dan Ford said at a press conference. “The boy who has talked to us said, ‘We were bored and didn’t have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody.’”

All 3 males who were in the car were under the age of 18. And in Oklahoma it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to own a revolver.

“We’ve got statutes right now that prohibit those three from having a firearm. They’re not legally entitled to have a .22-caliber revolver in the first place. You can give me another five, ten, hundred, a thousand laws. It’s not going to stop them. They’re criminals for a reason. It’s because they … don’t follow the laws that are there.” district attorney Hicks told The Oklahoman.

The ages of the 3 suspects who were captured are 15, 16 and 17. The 16-year-old is believed to be the one who fatally shot Christopher Lane. The two younger teenagers are being charged with 1st-degree murder, and the 17-year-old driver is being charged with accessory to murder.
The laws were already on the books to prevent these thugs from committing this crime. And adding additional laws will not prevent another crime like this, it will only prevent those who actually obey the laws to be able to defend themselves.
Because Hicks is not blaming the guns but the actual criminals involved, he is pushing for the maximum penalty for these 3 thugs, which would be life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“That’s as harsh as I can get. The Supreme Court back several years ago handed down a case that said you can’t seek death penalty in a case where you’ve got somebody under the age of 18 at the time of the commission of the crime,” he said. “Our hands are tied.”

The police are saying they still don’t know how the teens got their hands on the gun in the first place and are saying they may never know. But if someone is willing to kill someone because he is bored, he probably doesn’t mind breaking a few laws to get a gun. Blaming gun laws for this murder only takes the blame off of the ones who are really at fault here.
