A Growing Number of NY Sheriffs Are Saying They Will Not Enforce New Gun Laws
New York legislators were very proud of themselves when they passed some of the strictest gun control in the country with the SAFE act. Among, other unconstitutional infringements the new law limits gun magazines to just 7 rounds and considers any rifle with certain features to be an “assault weapon”.
The so called “SAFE” act was an emotional reaction to the Sandy Hook shootings and was pushed through very quickly with no chance for debate from gun owners who actually KNOW their rifles aren’t assault weapons.
Now, more and more New York sheriffs are refusing to enforce this law and are saying they will NOT take away guns from law abiding citizens who are merely exercising their 2nd amendment rights.
According to Bizpacreview.com, Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond is saying that he has no intentions to enforce this gun law and he will not do anything to confiscate firearms or force law abiding citizens to turn in their guns.
“I’m not going back on my personal conviction,” he said. Residents have told him this is what they want, he said, and “I’ve stood up for them, and I will continue to do so.”
Sheriff Desmond is not alone either. The New York Sheriff’s Association has joined up with five individual sheriffs in a court effort to block enforcement of the firearms and magazine restrictions.
When NY Governor Cuomo signed the law into effect he expressed,
“I am proud to be a New Yorker because New York is doing something. We are fighting back.”
Apparently the governor doesn’t realize that just DOING something does not equal doing the RIGHT thing. Cuomo is criticizing any talk of not enforcing his precious SAFE act saying that sheriffs cannot just choose which laws they want to enforce.
But the same could be said to Cuomo and that he cannot just choose which parts of the constitution to ignore. And these sheriffs are NOT just choosing which laws to enforce and which ones to ignore. They are choosing to respect the constitutional rights of the residents in their counties.
We support any sheriffs who choose to join Desmond and encourage NY citizens to vote out those lawmakers who pushed this gun legislation through under the cover of darkness.
